![]() History of mathematics – an outlinePrefaceThis material is based on lectures which I have given at the University of Helsinki several times in the course of almost 30 years. The main part of my audience were future mathematics teachers. I find it self-evident that a teacher can better appreciate the knowledge she is transferring to her students if she has some knowledge of its roots. Because of the place of origin of the text, some details referring to Finland, my home country, occasionally appear. I decided to keep them in this English version, if only for distinguishing it from the multitude of existing books on the history of mathematics.
